How an LD School Can Help
An LD school can help your child
Talisman Semesters is a residential, experiential, and academic LD school (Learning Disabilities school) for middle school to high school aged boys. Talisman improves social skills, academic performance, and self-esteem.
After attending our LD school, our boys have an easier time communicating their emotions, thoughts, and opinions with other people. We provide our students with the opportunity to improve their social skills and independently move towards a brighter future.
Who do we work with?
At Talisman Semesters, our students mainly struggle socially and academically. Our boys usually come to us with anger, sadness, avoidance of school, and a negative attitude toward family and friends. We strive to create an environment that is welcoming, safe, and nurturing in order to help our students to feel comfortable enough to open up and trust us.
Our typical students at our LD school have characteristics such as:
- Male 12-17 years old
- Middle and High school grades
- IQ 85 or higher
- Diagnosed with Autism Spectrum or ADHD
- No acute mental health problems: do not need clinical care or treatment program
- Socially awkward
- Verbally capable: ability to communicate, though may not do so very well
- Sensory integration issues
- Ability to communicate in group discussions: may not want to, but can
- Physically able to manage self-care: whether they choose to or not
What makes us different from other LD schools?
Talisman has over thirty years of experience dealing with adolescents with autism spectrum disorder and ADHD. Our staff are experienced and passionate about helping others live full, successful, and happy lives. Our LD school is intentionally small in order to allow us to focus on each student’s unique needs.
We aim to bring learning to life and so our students become more actively interested in learning. Semester-long enrollment allows our students to form strong bonds within others. They can develop new social skills personally and as a group. We concentrate on teaching our boys life-long independent living skills that will transition from our program back to their home.
